Why Water Matters
Beneath the sands of the Kalahari lies the Stampriet Transboundary Aquifer System (STAS)—an underground reservoir that provides clean water to communities, wildlife, and farms across Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa. This water source is precious, fragile, and under threat.
Unregulated mining practices, especially uranium leach mining, risk contaminating this vital aquifer. If we lose it, we don’t just lose water—we lose the future of the Kalahari and its people.
About SAUMA
SAUMA (Stampriet Aquifer Uranium Mining Association) is a Namibian nonprofit organization working to preserve and protect the Kalahari Aquifer. Their mission is to advocate for legislation, raise awareness, and prevent environmental damage caused by extractive industries.
